Santa Barbara Castle of Alicante

The Castle of Santa Barbara is located on the top of the 166 meter Mount Benacantil.

The origin of the Castle of Santa Barbara dates back to the late IX century, during the Muslim domination of Alicante. In 1248, on the feast of of Santa barbara (for which it is named), the future King Alfonso X The Wise took the fort from Arab hands. Three centuries later, King Carlos I ordered to fortify the site.

The current form of the Castle of Santa Barbara was given after a reforms that took place between 1562 and 1580, when most of its units were built.

The castle is divided into three parts located at different levels and from three different periods:

The first is known as The Turret, which is the oldest part the fort and which is located in the Tower of Homage.  Also located there is the English Bulwark and units such as the Noble Chamber and the Governor`s House. Also there is the esplanade known as Macho's Castle, where the citadel was located.

The second part corresponds to the intermediate compound and the most important residences: the Hall of Philip II, the Patio de Armas, the hermitage of Santa Barbara and the Queen's Bastion among others. It dates back to 1580.

Finally, we find the Revellín of Bon Repos, which dates back to the eighteenth century and is now used in part as parking.

After many years of neglect, the Santa Barbara Castle was opened to the public in 1963.

Access to the Castle of Santa Barbara can be done through a lift excavated in the rock and situated beachfront of Postiguet or on foot or by car via the road that begins at Vazquez de Mella Street and runs through the north side of Mount Benacantil.
