Walls of Avila
La Muralla de Avila (City Wall) is one of the best examples of medieval European architecture and the best example of Romanesque military construction in Spain.
The Wall was built on uneven terrain over more than 2.5 kilometers. The walls are 3 meters thic and 12 meters tall. Its perimeter has 2500 battlements, 88 towers, 9 gates and some parts join monuments like the Cathedral and the Palacio de los Dávila.
Among the nine entrances, there are two that stand out particularly for their defensive architecture, they were in the area of the wall that was more open to attack: the Puerta del Alcazar and the Puerta de San Vicente.
Although it is unclear when the wall was built, it is believed to be between the late eleventh and early twelfth century on the site of an older wall. It was reformed and strengthened in the fourteenth century.
