Basque Museum of Bilbao
Although best known as the Basque Museum (Euskal Museoa in Basque), its full name is the Archaeological, Ethnographic and Historical Basque Museum and it was opened in 1921.
The museum's permanent collection shows the evolution and history of the Basque people, from prehistory to the present, through archaeological and historical remains. The collection is divided into four floors. On the ground floor burial and heraldry slabs are displayed. The first floor has exhibits of weapons, ceramics, textiles and examples of pastoral culture. The second floor is devoted to Basque prehistory and archeology and the third houses a scale model of the province.
In the center of the courtyard a cloister depicts the Mikeldi, an animal deity from the pre-Christian Iron Age.
