Big Week of Bilbao
Bilbao's Big Week (Aste Nagusia in Basque), is the city's major festival. It is celebrated for nine days starting on the Saturday before August 22.
The festival begins with a txupin (rocket launch) and the reading a proclamation in the Plaza del Teatro Arriaga. This marks the beginning of the various activities: concerts, plays, bullfights, carnival activities and fireworks amongst others.
The symbol of the festival is known as Marijaia,a plump doll with upraised arms, which is burned on the last day of the celebrations.
