Guggenheim Museum of Bilbao
The Guggenheim Museum, situated along the estuary of Bilbao, has become the symbol of the city since its opening in 1997. Designed by Canadian architect Frank O. Gehry, the museum is one of several sites that the Guggenheim Foundation for the Promotion of Modern Art owns around the world.
The beauty of the building, with its boat like shape is a tribute to the port city of Bilbao with bright panels coated reminiscent of fish scales. It's design has led many artists to say that the building is well above the works it contains. It is said that its structure has no flat section.
The Guggenheim has become one of the most visited museums in Spain. The permanent exhibition comes from the Guggenheim Foundation funds and provides an overview of 20th century visual arts. Highlights include works from the second half of the 20th century with artists such as Chillida, De Kooning, Klein, Rauschenberg, Still, Tàpies and Warhol.
