May Crosses Festival in Cordoba
Cruces de Mayo (May Crosses) is a Christian tradition that takes place over 5 days between late April and early May.
This religious holiday consists of installing street crossings of about 3 meters high made entirely of flowers, plants and decorations. The sight of these beautiful crosses are accompanied by a beverage bar and typical dishes of the region.
The origin of this holiday is traditional in the sense that the residents themselve are the ones that fund and create their own Cruz de Mayo celebration.
The City Council created the Cruces de Mayo contest, which gives rewards out to the most beautiful crosses of three different categories: art historical area crosses, modern crosses, and indoor area crosses.
The tradition holds that all of the crosses are paraded throughout the streets of Cordoba and then awards are given to those with the best crosses.
