Holy Week of Granada
The Holy Week of Granada is an incredible spectacle thanks to its beautiful processions. Its history goes back to the days of the Reconquista when, after the expulsion of Muslims, the Church put all its efforts in to promoting Christian values and destroying the traditions of centuries of Arab influence.
One of the most remarkable processions of Holy Week is that of the Gypsies, which is held on the night of Holy Wednesday. It lasts twelve hours and covers the stretch from the cathedral to the Sacromonte Abbey. During the journey, fires are lit, and singing and dancing is done at intervals.
The procession of Silence is also remarkable, on the night of Holy Thursday the street lights are put out in its path and the procession takes place in absolute silence.
