The Cervantes Institute (Intituto Cervantes, in spanish) is a public institution created in 1991 for the promotion and teaching of the Spanish language and for the dissemination of Spanish and Latin- American culture. There are various centers located throughout the world.
One of its headquarters is in the Caryatids building on Alcala street, near the Plaza de Cibeles. The former headquarters of the Central Bank, it is used as a center for exhibitions and office space.
The building has four Caryatids (female figure sculpted into a column) carved in stone flanking the main entrance, built around a central covered-courtyard, surrounded by Ionic columns.
