Rastro of Madrid
El Rastro is an outdoor market that is organized on Sundays and public holidays in the historic center of Madrid, open from 9 to 15 h.
The flea market is held in the neighborhood of Embajadores. A maximum of 3,500 stalls spread around the Plaza de Cascorro and the monument dedicated to Eloy Gonzalo in the far north.
Traditionally, the stalls sell antiques and rare commodities.
For the German writer Hans Magnus Enzensberger, the Rastro is the last frontier of Europe to Africa, noting the great diversity of people from different countries and ethnicities that flow through there in search of bargains and attractions, sightseeing or to taste the cuisine of Madrid. Thus the area is a known for tapas bars.
