Alcazar of Segovia
Built between the 12th and 16th centuries, the Alcazar of Segovia has been restored and enlarged many times.
In the Middle Ages, the Alcazar became one of the favorite residences of the kings of Castille, especially Alfonso X. It was inhabited many times and became one of the most sumptuous palace-castles in the fifteenth century.
The fortress later served as a state prison until Charles II founded the Royal College of Artillery in 1762 which had its headquarters at the palace. In 1862 a fire destroyed the roofs of the sumptuous noble rooms, but they were faithfully rebuilt thanks to the existence of blueprints.
On the inside, the halls and rooms were decorated with great luxury and beauty by painters and Mudejar artists. Today, the Alcazar of Segovia houses a museum of Arms and Military Archive.
