Basilica of Our Lady of the Forsaken of Valencia
The Basilica of Our Lady of the Forsaken (Basílica de la Virgen de los Desamparados, in spanish) is a Baroque church dedicated to the patron saint of Valencia, built between 1652 and 1667. It is the only historic church that was not built on the site of another ancient church, monastery or mosque.
The main feature of the basilica is its oval plan, the oval at that time was the symbol of the virgin. Many years later they built the chapel of the Virgin Camarín in Baroque style and, in 1701, a new interior dome where the Cordoban artist Antonio Palomino painted frescoes symbolizing heaven.
