Holy Week of Zamora
The most relevant religious, cultural and social event of Zamora is by far Holy Week. Throughout the celebration of Holy Week, beginning on Good Friday to its completion on Easter Sunday, the city´s population quintuples in size.
The Holy Week celebration in Zamora was the first Easter holiday celebration to be declared an International Tourist Interest in the 70s.
The origin of the Zamoran Holy Week goes back to twelfth century, which created the oldest of its fraternities in Spain, that of Santa Vera Cruz.
The city´s sobriety and discipline stands out from the rest of Easter celebrations in Spain, in addition to the incalculable value of its imagery, such as the Gothic sculpture of Jesus Christ the Holy Spirit that dates back to the XV century.
