(1)Hontanas-(2)San Anton:0-5,5 km
(2)San Anton-(3)Castrojeriz:5,5-7,6(2,1 km)
(3)Castrojeriz-(4)Itero de la Vega:7,6-20,0(12,4km)
(4)Itero de la Vega-(5)Boadilla del Camino:20,0-28,2(8,2 km)
An almost flat stage although there is a very steep hill just after Castrojeriz. On this stage we pass by two of the most peculiar hostels of the camino: the albergue de San Anton and the albergue de San Nicolas de Itero. On this stage we leave Burgos and enter Palencia.
(1)Hontanas-(2)San Anton: 0-5.5 km
We leave Hontanas along the calle Real which brings us to the secondary road BU-P-4013 which we immediately leave (photo 1). We take a path which runs for some part along a wall (photo 2) until the path returns to the secondary road BU-P-4013 (photo 3). This road takes us to the ruins of the convent of San Anton (photo 4 and see photos hostel of San Anton), one of the most magical places of the Camino. The convent was founded by by Fernando VII in 1146 and was where the monks healed patients with an infectious gangrene known as "Fuego de San Anton", caused by a fungus that affects rye.
(2)San Anton-(3)Castrojeriz: 5.5-7.6(2.1 km)
The same road by which we arrived (photo 5) bring us to Castrojeriz (photo 6).
(3)Castrojeriz-(4)Itero de la Vega:7.6-20.0(12.4km)
We leave Castrojeriz along a dirt path (photo 7 and 8) and at the 11.6 km we begin a steep climb (photo 9). There are 1300 metres in which we ascend 140 metres on an incline of 11% until we get to the top (photo 10). If the rise was outstanding, the drop is equally outstanding. The drop is along a cement path (photo 11) and the way flattens out as the path becomes a dirt path (photo 12) which brings us 17.5 ( photo 13) where we come to a detour for Itero del Castillo. In Itero de Castillo there is a hostel but if you don’t want to spend the night there continue straight ahead.
600 metres from the junction we find the hostel “ el Albergue de San Nicolas de Itero, at the midpoint of the camino and one of the most peculiar hostels we will meet. (photo 14 and see hostel photos). We continue along the path and cross the Pisuerga river over the Fitero bridge (photo 15) after which we take a right and enter into the province of Palencia (photo 16). After a few metres we will come to the town of Itero de la Vega.
(4)Itero de la Vega-(5)Boadilla del Camino: 20.0-28.2(8.2 km)
We leave Itero along a secondary road but after 600 metres (photo 17) we leave it and go onto a dirt path (photo 19, 20 and 21) which leads us along a smooth ascent to Boadilla del Camino.
