Stage 2: Roncesvalles – Zubiri (21,7 km)
Many pilgrims start the camino in Rocncesvalles, one of the most important points of the camino. It is a beautiful stage with sections through fields and woodland sections amongst birch oak and pine trees. There are more downhill stretches than uphill but nevertheless this is a difficult stage.
1.-Roncesvalles-Burguete: 3.1 km
We leave Roncesvalles along the road and after 300 metres we take a turn off to the right. We turn onto a small path between oaks and beech trees (see photo 2). This beautiful path ends when it reaches the poligono de Ipetea where we take a left (see photo 3) and continue until we get to the N-135 (see photo 4) along which we enter the town of Burguete.
2.-Burguete-Espinal: 3.1-6,5 km (3.4 km)
We enter Burguete along the N-135 which is also the main street of the town. We pass the church “Iglesia de San Nicolas” and take a right where there is a Santander bank (see photo 5). We come to a footbridge over a stream (see figure 6) and continue straight. The road is pleasant, first along a track between meadow (see photo 7) and later passing into a small forest (see Figure 8).
3.-Espinal-Biscarreta: 6.5-11.2(4.7 km)
We arrive at Espinal and after passing several houses we come to a crossroads where the road meets with the N-135 and also where the church “Iglesia de San Bartolome” is located (see photo 9). We take a right onto the main street of Espinal and after approximately 200 metres we take another turn, this time to the left. We take an upward sloping tarmacadam road (see photo 10). After about half a kilometre we leave the road along a path to the right. We climb until the Alto de Mezkiritz (950 m) where the path crosses the N-135 highway (see photo 11). We go down along a forest path (see photo 12) and at two points this small path then joins the highway which leads to the town of Biscarreta (see photo 15).
4.-Biscarreta-Lintzoain: 11.4-13.3(1.9 km)
We exit the town of Biscarreta along the N-135 and take a left turn (see photo 16). We go more or less paralell to the road until we cross we cross it and continue to the town of Lintzoain (see photo 17).
5.-Lintzoain-Zubiri: 13.3-21.7(8.4 km)
Just outside the town of Lintzoain we begin a steep climb to the peak of Ero (800m) (see photos 18, 19, 20 and 21). The steepest hills are at the beginning of the rise to the peak. We cross the road (photo 22) and begin a descent (photo 23) that brings us to Zubiri. We enter Zibiri along the bridge “Puente de la Rabia” over the river Arga (see photo 24).
