Sao Pedro de Rate’s most prominent monument is the church of Sao Pedro de Rates. It was built in the century IX and then was reconstructed by Enrique de Borgona in 1100, it is classified as a national monument.
It is one the most important romantic medieval monuments from the emerging kingdom of Portugal from that time, this being due to it’s architectural and sculptural forms. The church of San Pedro de Rates is located beside the basin of the river Ave, and is one of the most important Cluniac Benedictine monasteries. The history of the church is linked to the legend of San Pedro de rates, the mythical first bishop of Braga, primaz das Espanhas (Iberian Peninsula),an hypothesis which goes back to the century XVI.
