The most beautiful and breathtaking landscapes of the Winter Way are found at Las Médulas. Las Médulas is a town made of rests of an old gold mine of the Roman period. At its time, it was the biggest outdoor mine of all the Roman Empire. The arduous engineering work made with the purpose of the extraction of gold meant a great alteration to the environment. However, it also had as a result an impressive and spectacular quicksand landscape full of vegetation of chestnuts and oaks. Las Médulas has been declared World Heritage Site.
Population: Less than 200 inhabitants.

Las Médulas is located at km 15.9 of Stage 2: Santalla-Las Médulas. It is located 27.5 km away from Ponferrada and 236.4 km from Santiago.
